Feeding guinea pigs is an extremely important question. The health and well-being of your pet depends on it. 

 Food for guinea pigs are various plant foods, primarily green food or hay. Also, the animal with pleasure β€œcrunches” apples, orurtsy, broccoli, parsley and lettuce. In summer, be sure to pamper your pets with juicy food: dandelions (along with a flower), alfalfa, yarrow, meadow clover. You can also give lupine, esparacet, sweet clover, peas, meadow rank, seradella, oats, winter rye, corn, ryegrass, nettle, plantain, hogweed, yarrow, couch grass, sage, tansy, heather, young sedge, colza, camel thorn. Collect grass for feeding the guinea pig only in an ecologically clean place, as far as possible from the roads. Plants should be washed thoroughly. Keep in mind that green food is given in moderation, as overfeeding can provoke various diseases. If you want to feed your pet with cabbage, choose broccoli – it swells the tummy of the guinea pig less. You can give cauliflower and savoy cabbage. But it is better not to give red and white cabbage. Valuable food for guinea pigs is carrots, which contain a lot of vitamin A and carotene. Apples are considered dietary food. Also a good dietary food is melon and cucumber. Pears are given a little bit. They give guinea pigs and dry food: oatmeal, corn (but not more than 10-20 grams per 1 kg of body weight per day). A guinea pig should always have access to fresh water. Vitamins can be added there (ascorbic acid, 20-40 ml per 100 ml of water).

Sample diet for guinea pigs

  • 100 grams of vegetables at any time of the year
  • Root crops: in winter and spring – 30 g each, in summer and autumn – 20 g each.
  • 300 grams of fresh herbs in summer and autumn.
  • 10 – 20 grams of hay in winter and spring.
  • Bread: in winter and spring – 20 – 30 grams each, in summer and autumn – 10 – 20 grams each.
  • Grain: 30 – 40 gr all year round.
